Fall Furnace Tune-Up Helps Head-Off Winter Breakdowns

If you're like most of us, we sometimes don't think about things until they breakdown!

You can perform a few basic services for your furnace throughout the heating season to keep it running smoothly, but it’s important to hire an HVAC professional to perform a comprehensive fall furnace tune-up at the start of the season. This helps catch problems early, prevents expensive repairs later and sets your furnace up for success this winter. Skipping preventative maintenance or only having cursory tasks performed doesn’t deliver these kinds of benefits.

Only hire an experienced HVAC contractor to perform a comprehensive fall furnace tune-up. While there’s no industry standard regarding precisely what a tune-up entails, a professional will typically:

  • Change the air filter, a task you should repeat at least every three months
  • Perform a combustion efficiency test
  • Check airflow and fan controls to ensure an accurate temperature rise
  • Check the venting system, such as the flue, for obstructions
  • Analyze combustion gases to ensure they meet unit specifications
  • Check the blower access door to ensure a tight seal
  • Check air intake louvers and grills and remove any blockage
  • Inspect the heat exchanger for corrosion, rust or cracks
  • Check the burners for proper ignition
  • Inspect the condensate to ensure it’s draining properly
  • Check the blower wheel, and clean and adjust if necessary
  • Conduct an amp-draw test
  • Check electrical connections for corrosion and tighten them if necessary
  • Ensure the thermostat is calibrated correctly and that settings are programmed properly
  • Lubricate all moving parts to reduce friction, save energy and extend equipment life
  • Check safety controls, including high limit, to ensure safe and proper operation
  • Check the gas line for leaks
  • Tighten or replace cracked or worn belts
  • Check the thermocouple and replace if necessary
  • Clean and adjust the pilot light, if applicable
